He Waʻa He Moku
He Moku He Waʻa

“He Waʻa He Moku He Moku He Waʻa” is an ʻōlelo noʻeau that I have recently grown to live by. It means “the canoe is an island, and the island is a canoe.”

Having been able to be a part of the Polynesian Voyaging Society I have found to really understand the meaning of caring for our islands and resources by way of the waʻa. I have the honor of working with the Polynesian Voyaging Society as a documenter and crew member. I have the amazing kuleana to capture photos and videos during sails and voyages across the pae ʻāina and the Pacific Ocean.

My goal is not just learn how to sail these beautiful and symbolic waʻa kaulua but to also capture the essence of life on the canoe, how we engage with our brothers and sisters and the voyaging experience as a whole.
